Literature Text

I am sorry if I smell like rain, and that bothers you because the rain makes you cold.
I am sorry if my hair rustles like pine needles, and that sound is unpleasant to your ears.
I am sorry if water rolls off of me as though I were stone, yet my muscles are not carved so.
I am sorry if I feel like damp earth, because my flesh is soft and yielding.
I am sorry if I have my seasons, my own storms, my own droughts, and they weaken you.
I am sorry if my smile is as bright as the sun, and it blinds you.
I am sorry that I am so natural and so beautiful that I take your breath away.
Got the idea for this poem as I was putting on my shorts this morning, still damp from the rain yesterday. I had also just been feeling dissatisfied with the appearance of my body; I am no fitness queen, after all. So I thought, could I really feel sorry if I was not physically beautiful enough for someone? Then this poem was born. You may wonder why I include it in my "lighthearted" poetry, and that is because it is humorous in intention. The apologies are not sincere, and in fact, the receiver of the poem is mocked for being irritated by natural traits of women. For example, most women are fleshy. Just because we are soft and not carved as hard as stone, are we any less deserving of love? Also, the last line of the poem is meant to give away the poem's intention, since I changed from using "if" to "that", revealing a previously hidden confidence that this daughter of nature has. She's sorry that she's so natural and beautiful that she takes the receiver's breath away, an obviously sarcastic statement that discredits her pathetic-sounding apologies prior.

Moral of the story: Women, no matter what figure or traits you have, you are beautiful, because you are naturally the way you are. Don't let anyone devalue you, because making you unworthy of love is impossible.

This is very wonderful. It makes one accept their flaws as beauties. Thanks for this lovely, uplifting piece .
